If all goes well this will be largely unchanged for the official release.

You can download the release here .
The official forum is here.

This should support all new games added in the 0.12.0 release cycle. These new games are largely untested on the GP2X so feedback about them is especially important.

All being well this is pretty much what will end up as the official 0.12.0 release apart from USB keyboard and improved touchscreen support to be added in later previews.

How to provide feedback?

In order to help me keep track of requests, bugs etc. I am asking that people kindly report such issues to the correct places (or at least copy them there). I don't spend all my time looking at forums and bug reports placed on random internet forums are never very helpful to me (i.e. they are very unlikely to get fixed). The same applies to feature requests etc. etc.

If you would like me to consider a feature or fix a bug help me to help you by ensuring the reports end up recorded in the one official place.

Bug Reports (ScummVM's Sourceforge bug tracker)

Feature Requests (ScummVM's Sourceforge feature tracker)

Note: Feature Requests for 0.12.0 are closed but any requests will be looked at for the next release.

Source Code Patches (ScummVM's Sourceforge patch tracker)

General Forum Feedback (ScummVM's GP2X forum, I also check any official news posts I make to the GP32x forums)

0.12.0 "Preview 1" released.

All,

This post is to announce the preview 1 release of the upcoming 0.12.0 release for the GP2X.

This release fully supports all GP2X's (F100 and F200 with touchscreens).
Touchscreen support is fairly primitive but should improve with preview 2> due to some changes I have in the works..

You can download the release here (pulled, use preview 2>) .
The official forum is here.

This should support all new games added in the 0.12.0 release cycle. The only fixes in this release are to specific games (Lure springs to mind). There are no noteworthy changes to the GP2X backend.

This release also marks a change in how I go about considering donations for my projects.

Previously I have never taken donations for any of my projects and have suggested that people either donate to charity or to the upstream projects. Whist I still firmly believe in this approach for a short while I am also going to accept donations for ScummVM so I can use any donations to actually get hold of a working GP2X (and maybe an F200 to improve support). So if anybody has hardware they no longer use and don’t need .

Don't worry, I have every intention of maintaining the port no matter what and I do NOT expect donations. Please also note that I do not accept donations for features, bounties or anything like that, only donate if you like what is there, not what may be done in the future. Also be assured that it really is appreciated.

Anyway, on a lighter note you can find information about the release on the main ScummVM pages here including download links for the GP2X.

Information for the GP2X port can be found on the ScummVM Wiki here.

Before any questions of compatibility with specific games are raised I would like to draw people’s attention to the following ScummVM Wiki page that outlines what criteria are used to decide if games are compatible with the port. I hope this should clear up any misunderstandings over what games are ‘supported’ on the port and the reasoning behind such decisions.

As always please leave feedback here or over at the ports official ScummVM forum.

Any updates to the compatibility information are always appreciated as are patches and bug reports or reasonable feature suggestions.

Enjoy messing about with ScummVM.

Official ScummVM 0.11.0 Release.

Hi Everybody,

Just a quick note to draw people’s attention to the latest and greatest release of ScummVM (0.11.0).

This includes the supported official release of the GP2X port.

You can find information about the release on the main ScummVM pages here including download links for the GP2X.

Information for the GP2X port can be found on the ScummVM Wiki here.

Before any questions of compatibility with specific games are raised I would like to draw people’s attention to the following ScummVM Wiki page that outlines what criteria are used to decide if games are compatible with the port. For reference this is all stored in an engine-data folder under the ScummVM working folder.

There are also a handful of small fixes and tweaks. As usual I would REALLY appreciate any feedback.

This release fully supports all GP2X's (F100 and F200 with touchscreens) however I am not able to extensively test these releases as I do not have a GP2X. Please put them in the tracker (or at least on the GP2X ScummVM forum) or they really stand very little chance of being fixed :).

Both the F100 and F200 (touch screen) are fully supported but as usual this build is, as yet, untested due to the fact I lack a GP2X.

No other new features are in this release, just the extended game support.

You can download the release below.

<s>ScummVM GP2X SVN LURE Support - Pre 0.11.0 - 04/12/2007</s>

Update: Due to a slight mess up with my local code yesterdays build did not work (a curse of not being able to test). Never the less the helpful people in #GP2XDev on EfNet (and Paeryn) have given me loads of help with code and testing and it at least loads some games and the touch screen works.

There are caveats however…

The mouse pointer is currently shown (I’ll fix that a little later).

Accuracy may well be very variable.

There is no right click (I’ll add push and hold for right licks like most PDAs if I can figure out a neat way).

On games that run at a native resolution higher then 320*240 I have no idea what will happen (who wants to try that and let me know).

I am told it does not seem to work if the GP2X is in the cradle/BoB, not sure why just yet. The code should just detect if a USB mouse is added and disable the touch screen but it seems to hang up if the cradle is connected. One to look at later.

For ease I built off the 0.10.0 release code rather then the current SVN so I had a stable base to work from.

Anyway, on to a download.

ScummVM GP2X F200 0.10.0 06/11/07

There is a thread on the ScummVM forums for feedback here.

Official ScummVM 0.10.0 Release.

Hi Everybody,

Just a quick note to draw people’s attention to the latest and greatest release of ScummVM (0.10.0).

This includes the supported official release of the GP2X port.

You can find information about the release on the main ScummVM pages here including download links for the GP2X.

Additionally the compatibility lists, supported engines and information for the GP2X port has been tidied up for this release and this information can be found on the ScummVM Wiki here.

As always please leave feedback here or over at the ports official ScummVM forum (there is a thread for this relase).

Any updates to the compatibility information are always appreciated as are patches and bug reports or reasonable feature suggestions.

0.10.0 preview 1 released.

Well this is the 1st official 0.10.0 GP2X preview build up for people to take a look at and report bugs back on.

This is a little bit of a short notice preview release (I have had other commitments that have kept me from ScummVM).

I would be eternity grateful to anybody who gives this build a bit of a road test over the next 24 hours or so and reports back issues to me as the aim is to release 0.10.0 final in a few days.

Those of you who follow SVN builds should find most of your feedback and 'easy' bug fixes have made this release.

Main changes in this build from last SVN release:

Built from latest 0.10.0 pre-release SVN code (and only that code so ARM mixer and DXA speedups from HEAD SVN/local patch builds are NOT in this release)

Support "predictive text" entry in AGI games as long as a suitable dictionary is available (included in zip) - You can access the predictive text dialogue in AGI games with "Left Trigger + A" when you want to type something.

Notes:

Please make sure you do not have a .scummvmrc (config file) in your ScummVM.gpe folder. A new clean config is a must as config handling code has changed.

Do make sure you scan over the README-GP2X.html - It has been HTML'ised to make it really easy to read ;). (Note: I have still got to update this for the 0.10.0 release)

For feedback on the build there is a forum post in ScummVMs GP2X forum.

Known Issues:

None known but this build has not been exhaustively tested by me due to time constraints.

Engines enabled in this release (untested):

SCUMM [v7 & v8 games] [HE70+ games]

AGOS (with DXA cutscenes)

Beneath a Steel Sky

Broken Sword 1 (with DXA cutscenes)

Broken Sword 2 (with DXA cutscenes)

Flight of the Amazon Queen

SAGA

Legend of Kyrandia

Gobli*ns

Cinematique evo 1

AGI

Touche: The Adventures of the Fifth Musketeer

Parallaction

Download:

Go get it.

If you want to post information about preview builds on news sites please do, but a link back here for the download would be great to save preview/test builds getting littered all over the place.

As always, if you want to be sure you have the latest official build of ScummVM get it from here or the official ScummVM site.

New Test Build: For testing DXA cut-scene support only.

Hi all,

If anybody has Broken Sword One or Two handy could they consider giving the test build linked below and DXA cut-scene packs a quick test.

All details on the test build are here on the ScummVM forums.

This is not a usual build and really should not be used for anything other then testing DXA support. I can assure you all that the developers who need the tools are really dedicated to improving and adding more and more support to ScummVM and that can only be a good thing, they are also really nice folks (tm) ;).

If you want to make a donation for the GP2X port specifically then mention it in the donation comments and I will keep a list of supporters but believe me supporting the main ScummVM project is far more use then kindly offering me beer money ;).

Of course the exception still stands that if you happen to have any ScummVM supported games that I am missing and you would not mind parting with them for free or a reasonable price it is always appreciated. I can use them to test and improve GP2X support. Hint: Does anybody have a spare copy of the Feeble Files ;).

I will start to keep a list of games I am on the lookout for on my ScummVM WiKi page.

John Willis

0.9.1 preview 2 released.

Well this is the 2nd official 0.9.1 GP2X preview build (and last, I hope, before the real 0.9.1 release) for people to take a look at and report bugs back. Feedback on this build will help get a decent release and this is really for bug catching and compatibility so I can update the WiKi.

Changes in this build:

Built from latest 0.9.1 pre-release SVN

Fix for 'Exit' bugs in code and launching is now wrapped in a script with ScummVM.gp2x being the main executable

Default location for save games is in the saves folder under the ScummVM executable

Uses Modern theme by default not Classic

Has "zoom" mode for larger games (toggle with L-Trigger and Y in game)

Lots of other fixes on savegame stuff and the like

Notes:

Please make sure you do not have a .scummvmrc (config file) in your ScummVM.gpe folder. A new clean config is recommended if you are using a build older then preview 1 as config handling code changed in preview 1.

Do make sure you scan over the README-GP2X.html - It has been HTML'ised to make it really easy to read ;).

For feedback on the build there is a forum post in ScummVMs GP2X forum.

Known Issues:

Please let me know any bugs ASAP as I am hoping this will be the last preview prior to the official 0.9.1 release.

Download:

Go get it.

If you want to post information about preview builds on news sites please do, but a link back here for the download would be great to save preview/test builds getting littered all over the place.

0.9.1 preview 1 released.

Well this is the 1st official 0.9.1 GP2X preview build up for people to take a look at and report bugs back. There is still some way to go for a decent release and this is really for bug catching and compatibility feedback.

Changes in this build:

Built from latest 0.9.1 pre-release SVN

Default location for save games is in the saves folder under the ScummVM.gpe

Uses Modern theme by default not Classic

Has "zoom" mode for larger games (toggle with L-Trigger and Y in game)

Lots of other fixes and bugs yet to be found ;)

Notes:

Please make sure you do not have a .scummvmrc (config file) in your ScummVM.gpe folder. A new clean config is a must as config handling code has changed.

Do make sure you scan over the README-GP2X.html - It has been HTML'ised to make it really easy to read ;).

For feedback on the build there is a forum post in ScummVMs GP2X forum.

Known Issues:

Exiting ScummVM hangs the GP2X (well it does not correctly launch the menu again). This will be fixed in the next preview.

Download:

Go get it.

If you want to post information about preview builds on news sites please do, but a link back here for the download would be great to save preview/test builds getting littered all over the place.

ScummVM for the GP2X is now an official port.

Its official - ScummVM for the GP2X is now officially part of the main ScummVM project and I am very happy to say I have taken up the role as the official port/backend maintainer.

This means that the latest GP2X port (well apart from my experimental stuff) is in the subversion repository along with all the other source-code.

It also means that major releases of the GP2X version will be released alongside the other ScummVM versions (all being well starting with 0.9.1 in the near future) and will be downloadable from the official ScummVM site.

From now on, bugs and feature requests for the GP2X port can be reported via the ports own ScummVM forum and the ScummVM bug tracker. I will endeavour to support users on the forum whenever I can.

In addition the scattered resources for the GP2X port are being centralised and will be centred around the GP2X pages on the official ScummVM WiKi.

This does not mean that the GP2X port has suddenly got magically more compatible or supports every game at blistering speed, or that many bugs have been fixed from the most recent test releases. It does mean however that the port now has the support of the whole team, a great help when tracking down obscure bugs, and being an official port there is an incentive to make quality timely releases. It also gives me access to a huge amount of resources that make my job as a maintainer a lot easier.

I view this all as a “very good thing” (tm).

There will be a few changes to the port to in new releases that where required to make sure it was a good match for the rest of ScummVM (save handling and the like) but nothing that should detract from its usability. Please make sure you review the README-GPX.html in any new builds to make sure you are up to date with developments.

On the subject of new builds, expect 0.9.1 preview builds in the next few days, feedback on those preview builds will be vital to ensure the 0.9.1 GP2X release is as good as it can be.

Regards,

John Willis

ScummVM: Work in Progress Builds

I thought I would just quickly post this to make people aware that regular "Work in Progress" (i.e. totally unsupported, buggy builds with the newest features) of the GP2X port are posted to the ScummVM for the GP2X beta thread on the GP32x forums.

You can almost allways find the latest WIP the builds there (work back from the end of the thread) and feedback is most appreciated. The only way to get any sort of support on these builds is via the above forum thread.

These builds are always made against the latest core SVN at the time of the build and not from any release branch and have not been rigorously tested (or tested at all really other then loading a SCUMM engine game or 2 ;)) - being from the latest SVN there is no guarantee the underlying ScummVM core is in fact stable.

If people do download and test these builds please give feedback on the thread as the more feedback and reports the quicker bugs can be tracked down and the quicker stable builds that everybody can use are ready :).

Regards,

John

Request for 'features' feedback.

All,

As some of you know I now have a working GP2X again so I now have something to test my hacking efforts on :).

With that in mind this is a very quick post to ask for feedback on what (reasonable) features people would like to see added to the port. This will help me make a sensible TODO to work from.

In addition what bugs do people consider show stoppers in the current alphas etc.?

I want to have a bit of a push to make the port a bit more feature rich and less buggy before I put it up for inclusion in ScummVM's main SVN but I can't do that without feedback and help.

I'll start to do new beta test releases based on current SVN ScummVM as soon as I get some of the stuff below stabilised.

Current WIP features (updated 10 August 2006):

USB mouse support - this has been requested by users running ScummVM on TV's.

DXA video support for Feeble Files (Note: FF does not work yet) and BS1/2.

Save Fixes (Can people help by detailing the exact bugs).

On screen key input (Got this re-designed but not started a new implementation yet, any offers of help?).

I have cross posted this to the ScummVM/GP2X project page and GP32x's forums.

Please feel free to reply to the GP32x thread with comments clearly stating if your comments are about 'new features', 'improvements' or 'bugs' and provide detail if it will help.

Regards,

John Willis

ScummVM for the GP2X - Alpha Test Release 7 - 0.9.0 SVN

ScummVM for the GP2X - Alpha Test Release 7 - 0.9.0 SVN

Hello everybody,

Sorry for the rather long time between releases. For various reasons (most not good) I am really struggling to find quality time to hack about on projects at the moment. Still, I found a few hours tonight so it is time for another new widespread ScummVM for the GP2X alpha.

Thanks to the GP32x and #GP2XDEV folks for helping me get some of the more interesting (and SD corrupting) bugs out of the recent builds. As usual please leave feedback as it helps me know if this project is going the way people want it to.

This is a test release of ScummVM for the GP2X, it would be appreciated if this alpha test distribution was not mirrored and that people be directed to http://www.distant-earth.com/scummvm instead, until the port is a little more mature, to ensure people download the most recent builds.

This build is still in a very heavy state of development and as such no '‘expected' behaviorur can be guaranteed ;). I tested with firmware 1.4.0 for reference.

Please check the README-GP2X.TXT in the archive for controls and important info.

This build can be viewed as having the features of Alpha 6 with the following changes...

NEW ENGINES SINCE ALPHA 6:

SCUMM - All games supported by ScummVM should work to some extent, using the hardware scalar if needed.

Sword 1 and 2 - This engine is now supported using the hardware scalar (looks nasty).

Lure - This new ScummVM engine is included for testing but the game is NOT playable yet.

RECENT CHANGES:

Volume control is back in, volume - and + do what you would expect, to change text speed like older builds hold Left Trigger and press volume - and +.

Added '0' as a button mapping so you can all play MI2 using that to get past the copy protection.

Remapped button layout a bit and added 'button combos'. See the readme for more details.

Refined audio hacks a little more.

Hardware Scalar code is now working much better and all the SVGA games are scaled on the fly to fit the GP2X's LCD (and TV screen, not that I have a TV out lead to check).

Using the new skinable GUI, make sure you have DEFAULT-THEME.ZIP in the same dir as the GPE.

Lots of misc hacks to the code, some good and a lot bad ;-).

SOURCE:

Port source is available on request via e-mail. Note this is development code (and VERY messy). A patch based on this code is going into ScummVM's patch tracker in a few days.

DOWNLOADS:

ScummVM for the GP2X - Alpha 7 - 0.9.0-SVN

John Willis
Monday 13th Feb - 2006

ScummVM for the GP2X - Alpha Test Release 6 - 0.9.0 CVS

ScummVM for the GP2X - Alpha Test Release 6 - 0.9.0 CVS

1st big public release (not on IRC) as I have too many people to send links to now ;).

This is a test release of ScummVM for the GP2X, it would be appreciated if this alpha test distribution was not mirrored and that people be directed to http://www.distant-earth.com/scummvm instead, until the port is a little more mature, to ensure people download the most recent builds.

This build is still in a very heavy state of development and as such no ‘expected’ behaviour can be guaranteed ;).
I tested with firmware 1.2.1 for reference.

INCLUDED ENGINES:

Scumm - (All 320*2xx SCUMM engine games EXCEPT Humongous Entertainment and Scumm Version 7/8 games).
Simon - (Simon the Sorcerer one and two).
Sky - (Beneath a Steel Sky).
Kyra - (The Legend of Kyrandia) – This engine is still under heavy development in ScummVM, however the game is playable.
Gob - (Goblins one)
Queen - Fate of the Amazon Queen

All other game engines are disabled in this release.

SUPPORTED AUDIO OPTIONS:

Raw audio.
MP3 audio.
OGG Vorbis audio (this may be problematic, I just made some big changes to my Tremor code).

RECENT CHANGES:

Remapped button layout to match NK’s ScummVM Korean port. (This is subject to change, feedback appreciated).
Note: Stick click also works as a pseudo ‘select’ button allowing you just use the stick to walk around screens.
Refined audio hacks to reduce audio delay to about 18MS rather then 30MS in Alpha 5.
Now built using SDL 1.2.9 for the parts of the port that use SDL (some parts now hit the hardware directly).
Aspect Ratio Correction can now be disabled ‘per game’. When adding a game you can find this option on the GFX tab.
Note: This will cause the game to run with a black border at the bottom as it will be rendered to a 320*200 frame.

HOW TO SAVE:

Note: Everything is saved to the SD card, saves are stored in the game folder, and the config file for ScummVM is stored in the same place as the GPE.

Ok, this is for Scumm engine games but the principle is the same for all.

In Game.

1. Right Trigger
2. Select SAVE with B
3. Select a position with B
4. Right trigger puts ? in the name box for some text.
5. Press B to save

Basically the emulated keys you have are what I mapped the buttons to ;-), I have a virtual keyboard like the GP32 one (left/right on the stick to pick chars) to add in at some point ;-)

CONTROLLER MAPPING:

This now mostly matches NK’s Korean port; it is very different from Alpha 5. This is subject to change; it still does not ‘feel’ right.

Mouse Emulation

Stick: Move Pointer
Stick Click: ‘light’ Left Click
B: Left click
X: Right click

Keyboard Emulation

Start: Return
Select: Escape
Y: Space Bar (Pause)
Right Trigger: Game Menu (Save, Load, Quit etc.)
Volume Buttons: Increase and Decrease subtitle speed (I really think I should map this to volume again ;))

MAJOR TODOS:

Fix save support when using the Sky engine (Beneath a Steel Sky) – You CAN’T save at the moment.
Look into inconsistencies with Simon engine and map Y key to a button combination to allow clean quitting (Simon 1/2).
Add splash-screen and pre-ScummVM config menu (CPU speed, LCD timings etc.) - Partly done.
Fix TV out, maybe make it an option in the pre-ScummVM config menu.
Fix scalar code and discover why the resulting downscaled screen flickers like mad and looks awful (Main reason the scalar is disable in this release).
Any help appreciated :).

SOURCE:

Port source is available on request. Note this is development code (and VERY messy). Once it is cleaner I intend to submit a path to the ScummVM team.

DOWNLOADS:

ScummVM for the GP2X - Alpha 6 - 0.9.0-CVS

John Willis
Friday 13th Jan - 2006

ScummVM: Assistance wanted

Of a kind GP32 developer with some free time and a delight in looking at BAD code!

Well ScummVM is moving on but very slowly as many of you have noticed and commented (do keep the comments comming) and I was putting out a bit of an open request for anybody with some C/C++ skills who has a GP32 and is familiar with both the GamePark SDK and accessing parts of the hardware directly via ASM, custom pseudo SDK’s etc. to drop me an e-mail or leave a comment if they feel they can help.
The development environment is GCC/ARM based and SDT/ADS compilation is not really an option.

Not really looking for any other sort of help at the moment thanks.

I am looking to get a new public release out the door (test release that is, it’s a new backend remember so it does not necessarily have all the features or qualities :) of the older releases or ScummVM's desktop versions).

I have a bunch of bugs I want to squish and I just don’t have the time to fix them on my own in anything resembling a sensible timeframe.

A few main problems are blitting related and a big memory leak or 3 so that should give you an idea of the help I am looking for.

Thanks,

John Willis

Another World for the GP32: New project site

I have set a site up for a project I am working on to release Another World on the GP32 using the RAW engine.

More info on it can be found here.

ScummVM: Progress (of sorts)

Right where to start.

Ok, I am making this status update to reassure people that the GP32 port of ScummVM is in fact not dead (it’s been in and out of a coma lately but that’s another story).

Progress has been very slow of late however following some recent free time the current version of the port now compiles cleanly against the very latest CVS code however don’t get your hopes up. In this instance compiles is not the same as works as it crashes rather spectacularly very early into the engine.

The big thing worth noting however is that this code and all released code for the port from now on is living in ScummVM’s main developer CVS and is now (I guess) the official ScummVM GP32 backend/port.

What does this mean for the GP32 port?

Well if you’re so inclined you can checkout the code for ScummVM and build a GP32 FXE without any extra patches from the latest code (as said above, build, but it’s not useable yet) and have a good laugh at the shoddy quality of the code.

If you want to help out you can get the code and get patching. Any fixes or optimisations for just about anything in the GP32 backend are appreciated and I guess you could log them via the official patch tracking system over at SourceForge or via an e-mail to me and I will build them in.

I am working reasonably hard to try and get this code into a shape for some betas in the not to distant future, I won’t commit to timescales as they come and go far to quickly for me and life has a nasty habit of getting all complicated when you least want it to. It won't be in time for ScummVM 0.7.1 I am afraid.

I guess that’s about it for now, the addition of the code to ScummVM’s main CVS seemed a worthwhile enough cause for a long overdue update and the fact I have some time currently to spend on it is a big plus point.

New DevKitArm release

I managed to miss out on this but a new build (R11) of WinterMute's excellent DevKitArm is now available on the Sourceforge page.

Now using GCC 3.4.3 as its core it has to be second only to hand building your compiler if you want to code for the GP32 or GBA.

Oooops :-)

It would appear that I have an 'oh so slightly scary' nerd score ;).
